What are waiting periods for pet insurance claims?

Asked a year ago

I want to get pet insurance this month as I have a dog that is 3 years old, and is due for all his check-ups soon. We are also travelling the following month where anything can happen. I'd like to know what the waiting period is before the pet insurance kicks in and I can submit my first claim?

The waiting period is the time between when you purchase your policy and when the coverage begins. Pet insurance waiting periods can be broken down into three types.

1. Waiting periods for accidents range from 1 to 15 days. 2. Waiting periods for illnesses, such as cancer or bladder infections, are usually 14 days with most policies. 3. Waiting periods for specific conditions, such as hip dysplasia, can range from 6 to 12 months.

Most policies don't cover check-ups unless you buy a "wellness" add-on. Since you are planning to purchase pet insurance anyway, buying it as soon as possible before your pup develops any conditions is best.
