Do pet insurance costs increase if I make a claim?
Asked 2 years ago
I'm new to the insurance game and I have a question: if I make a claim will it increase my premium and/or overall insurance cost? If so, why?

Hi there! I am a pet insurance adjuster. Filing a claim alone should not increase the price of your premium immediately- for most policies the price of the premium is locked in for the policy year. Filing a claim may impact your renewal price but it is highly likely that your renewal price would increase anyway as most policies increase as your pet ages or as the average cost of veterinary care in your area goes up. There are some insurances, like Trupanion, that have a policy to not automatically increase premiums based on age. Other options like Figo and Metlife reward you with a lower deductible each year you do not file a claim.
My personal recommendation would be to claim all vet visits as it counts against your deductible and reduce the chances of being denied coverage later on.
