Is a large breed dog more prone to canine arthritis?
Asked 2 years ago
My dad gave me a Rottweiler puppy for my birthday, and I've loved being a dog mom. I've always wanted a large breed dog, and he seems so perfect. I want to plan for the future and be on the lookout for any potential health issues that might impair his quality of life. Can he get arthritis as a result of his size?

Certain large breeds of dogs, including Rottweilers, are more prone to arthritis because of the added stress and wear and tear on their joints. Keeping your dog active and at a healthy weight can help a lot, though. If your dog is overweight, consider adjusting his diet; large-breed puppies in particular shouldn’t be free-fed as this increases the risk of obesity and puts added pressure on their growing skeletal system.
It’s also a good idea to discuss joint care supplements with your vet – these can help strengthen the joints and repair cartilage.
