How do I teach my dog to walk nicely on a leash?

Asked a year ago

I would not say my dog pulls all the time but he often wants to lead and go in random directions. I want him to learn that I lead the walks. How do I achieve this?

It’s OK to let your dog lead the walk sometimes. There’s even a name for doing that — sniffari! That’s a walk where you allow your dog to sniff as much as he wants. This provides excellent mental exercise and helps prevent boredom; it also tires out your dog so he won’t pull as much after. To prevent leash pulling, practice walking in less exciting areas and make sure your dog gets plenty of playtime and exercise during the day.
