How do I teach my dog not to bark excessively?
Asked 2 years ago
My dog barks and barks for any noise that she hears from outside - but when we are on walks she is very quite and afraid. Why could this be? How can I help her stop?

The trick to reducing barking is to understand why your dog is barking in the first place. It sounds like outside noises frighten your dog. I would advise making simple changes to your pup's environment so she no longer feels she has to bark. For example, cover the window if she barks at passers-by or other animals through a window to block her view. If just noises scare her, try leaving the television or radio on. If you know something will make her bark, distract her with a toy or treat. Finally, consistently reward her when she is quiet and calm.
