How can I stop my dog from barking at people on walks?

Asked a year ago

My dog balks at everyone - near or far without hesitation. I don't know if it is because he feels threatened or if he is just showing off and stating his presence. Either way, I really want it to stop. What can I do?

Your dog may feel threatened and need to alert you to the presence of someone else. Or he may be barking to make the threat go away. The good news is you can change his response. Next time you go out on a walk, bring a bag of high-value treats. When your dog notices someone and before he barks, give him treats one after another until the person is out of sight. You are training him to turn his focus to you rather than focus on the trigger (the passing person). Continue doing this, and your dog will quickly learn that he doesn't have to be threatened by someone in the area, nor does he have to bark to make them disappear. Instead, he will learn that he gets yummy treats when the trigger is present and the treats stop coming when it is gone.
